TGLE Research offers in-depth studies to advance understanding and best practices on the subject of a self-chosen death, and supports in the realisation of research projects concerning a self-chosen death.

TGLE Research published several scientific articles whilst working at the Amsterdam University Medical Center (VUmc) into methods to end one’s own life, and researching the course of self-chosen deaths by voluntary stopping eating and drinking and ingesting lethal medication after these people received counselling from Right-to-Die organization Foundation De Einder.

TGLE Research also worked together with Foundation 'Laat Mij Gaan' (Let Me Go) and Dutch Right-to-Die Societies Foundation De Einder and NVVE to support the realisation of various books and scientic research articles and reports in the field of a self-chosen death.

Publications, books and research projects

Self-determined deaths in the Netherlands (2026)

This replication study of Chabot's thesis 'Auto-euthanasia' (2007) estimates the frequency of people ending their own life by Voluntarily Stopping Eating or Drinking or Ingesting Self-Collected Lethal Means without assistance from a physician under the Dutch Euthanasia Law. Foundation Laat Mij Gaan and Right-to-Die organization NVVE and Foundation De Einder supported the realisation of this study.

Life after an autonomous death (2026)

 

This book describes the experiences of bereaved survivors who were left behind after their loved ones self-determined the time of their own end-of-life in a humane, and dignified manner. Foundation Laat Mij Gaan supported the realisation of this book.

The autonomous route. Self-determination of life's end (2025)

This book contributes to talking about the 'taboo' subject of a self-chosen life's end outside the practice of the Dutch Euthanasia Law. It provides an overview of subjects and definitions relevant to this theme, and contains a multitude of view points and opinions from tens of experts in the field, and citizens advocating for their right to die. Foundation Laat Mij Gaan (Let Me Go) supported the realisation of this book.

Non-punishable assistance in suicide outside the Dutch Euthanasia Law (2022)

This thesis gives an overview of research articles on counselling provided by Right-to-Die organization Foundation De Einder, describing characteristics of people seeking this counselling and the counselling itself, and the frequency and charactertics of counsellees ending their own life.

Suicide in the presence or absence of a medical condition (2021)
 

This research article focusses on people who - either in the presence or absence of a medical condition - choose to end life without assistance from a physician under the Dutch Euthanasia Law. It estimates the frequency, and describes their demographic and medical characteristics. 

Experiences with demedicalised assistance in suicide (2021)
 

This research article explores the experiences with counselling that counselees receive(d) from counsellors
facilitated by Right-to-Die organization Foundation De Einder.

Suicide by medication after receiving demedicalised assistance in suicide (2020)

This research article describes the characteristics of counselees who passed away through self-ingesting self-collected lethal medication after receiving demedicalised assistance in suicide, and the characteristic of the counselling they have received.

Non-punishbable assistance in suicide outside the Dutch Euthanasia Law (2020)

This research article addresses why people seek assistance in suicide from Right-to-Die organizations, how this is related to request for physician-assisted dying, and how these people value the counselling by Right-to-Die organizations.

Why people seek demedicalised assistance in suicide (2017)

 

This research article explores which trajectories people take when seeking demedicalised assistance in suicide, and pleads for more mutual understanding, respect and empathy for the limitations and possibilities of the position of the physician and the patient in discussing assistance in dying.

Which people seek demedicalised assistance in suicide (2014)

A research article on people seeking counselling outside the medical practice of the Dutch Euthanasia Law. It clarifies which people seek this counselling, what there reasons are, and what the content of the counselling practice entails.

Elderly people and a self-chosen death (2014)

This report addresses the issue of elderly people who have a wish to end life because of a so called 'completed life'.  More and more Dutch citizens prefer to self-determine over one own life's end. Phycisians are reluctant to assist in suicide as a result of 'completed life'.

PaTZ Palliative Home Care (2014)

A research article on how PaTz - an intervention to improve palliative care provision and strengthen the generalist knowledge of palliative care - is successful in enhancing collaboration in primary palliative care and easy to implement.
